The Tampa Bay Rays secured their fifth AL East title with a 6-1 win over the New York Yankees in the second game of a doubleheader at Yankee Stadium. Drew Rasmussen pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing just one hit, while Yandy Díaz contributed with two two-run singles. Díaz’s performance was key, as he added another two-run single in the ninth inning, securing his AL-leading 175th hit of the season.
This marks the Rays’ first AL East title since 2021 and their earliest division clincher in franchise history, surpassing the 2021 team by three days. The team also won the division in 2020, 2010, and 2008, the latter year seeing them reach the World Series and achieve their first winning season. Díaz reflected on the achievement, stating, “So here we are in Yankee Stadium celebrating and we feel really happy that we got the job done.”
Dominance in a Competitive Division
The Rays have led the division since June 27, spending 128 days in first place. They opened a six-game lead over the Yankees with just five games remaining, securing the No. 1 seed and home-field advantage in the American League playoffs. Tampa Bay’s record stands at 96-61, while the Yankees are at 90-67. The Rays are also just two games behind the Milwaukee Brewers for the best record in the majors, positioning them for potential home-field advantage throughout the postseason.
Despite a slow start in April, the Rays rebounded strongly, winning 13 of 18 games before reclaiming the division lead on May 10. They briefly lost the top spot in mid-June but quickly regained it, showcasing their resilience and consistency. Rasmussen said, “We love being together and we’re trying to spend as much time as we can possibly together.”

A Season of Challenges and Triumphs
The Rays’ success is even more remarkable considering the challenges they faced. Last season, they played home games at Steinbrenner Field due to damage to their home stadium, Tropicana Field, from Hurricane Milton. This year, they returned to Tropicana Field, posting an impressive 55-26 home record. The team also secured a financing plan for a new stadium in Tampa, set to open in 2029, providing long-term stability.
The Yankees, meanwhile, faced significant setbacks, including injuries to star player Aaron Judge, who only played in 66 games due to a fractured right rib and a sore right calf. Judge’s absence likely impacted the Yankees’ performance, particularly in the latter part of the season.
Clinching the Title in Style
The Rays’ victory was sealed with a three-run seventh inning in the nightcap, following a 2-0 loss in the opener. Díaz’s singles in the seventh and ninth innings were key, with Taylor Walls contributing a bunt single and Díaz lining a single to center field for a 4-0 lead. After the final out, the Rays celebrated on the field, with fans cheering from the stands. The party continued in the clubhouse, where players sprayed bubbly and beer, dancing to loud music. “I’m very happy because this is a special group,” third baseman and AL MVP candidate Junior Caminero said.
