Understand How Big The Server Room Will Be
In the world of IT, you are likely going to have several hundred square feet of room to work with, but it could also be quite smaller. You can house all of this equipment in what will be designated as a data centre. It can be virtually any size as it just depends on how much equipment that you need to put in it.
The shape of the server room actually doesn’t matter. There are certain situations where you will also have a print shop in the general vicinity, or a storage area or office space that you can use. It is because of the nonstandard way that these rooms can be laid out that you may run into problems. Managing this environment, especially regarding how cool it is, and what the airflow is going to be, should be your top priority. See here for Source UPS.
Why Server Rooms Are So Unique In Their Design
When a small business decides to install its own computer servers, it is important to designate a particular room for all of this equipment. It could be a temporary situation, or you may have a much smaller room than you were anticipating for the limited amount of equipment that you have. You also need to keep everything running, and this can be done out of what is often referred to as a computer closet.
When there are upgrades or design changes, the server room must be set up in a certain way to accommodate these changes. You may want to place everything into a new server room that can help you avoid potential problems. Almost all of these are going to follow these inclinations and possibilities in design in order to operate properly:
- Precise Environmental Control – Sensors probably represent the most important thing that you can have in your server room as they can detect humidity and temperature. The environmental controls that you have at your disposal can help you keep the temperature at particular levels. Airflow Planning – all of this equipment is going to create a large amount of heat. That’s why having good airflow, and avoiding hotspots, is the best way to prevent damage from occurring.
- Fire Suppression System – you really don’t want to have a sprinkler system set up in the server room as this will use water on the fire that might break out. This is going to create a large problem as it will damage all of your equipment. You have a couple of options such as the FM 200 series, as well as the Inergen systems which have become very popular. These can extinguish all of the fires without affecting the computer equipment at all.
- Cable Management Solutions – you may end up with miles of cable in this small designated area. You will likely have all of this going through the walls, ceiling, and under the floor, and you need to keep this as neat as possible. Redundant Power Sources – all of these systems must have some type of redundant power source which will allow 100% uptime in case there are interruptions in the power that you typically have, or if you have power surges, you need to have this accessible to level out the surges in the damage that they can cause.
- Physical Security – Many of these rooms are going to have millions of dollars in equipment in them. This does not count all of the data that is likely not going to have a dollar amount because it is invaluable. By having physical security in place, you can ensure that all of your systems will be protected.
- DMARK Location – there will be multiple data circuits going into these rooms, and this will likely come from several telephone companies. Having a DMARK point is very important, which designates the responsibility to the telco’s and then passes this off to the business. Having a configured in this way can help your business dramatically.
