Nature’s beauty boosts mental wellbeing

People who spend time in natural settings while hearing birdsong experience sharper drops in stress and larger improvements in mood than those surrounded by urban noise. A study from North Carolina State University examined these effects through a controlled experiment.

How the experiment worked

Participants were assigned to sit in one of two locations: a reclaimed nature trail isolated from development or a busy city street. Each wore noise-cancelling headphones playing either traffic sounds or birdsong. The pairings were randomized to measure the separate effects of environment and sound.

After the session, participants completed questionnaires about stress levels and how refreshed they felt. The results showed the strongest positive shift when natural sights and birdsong were combined. Urban sights paired with traffic noise produced the opposite effect.

What the findings revealed

In the group exposed to green space and birdsong, positive emotions increased while negative emotions decreased. Stress scores dropped, and feelings of restorativeness rose higher than in any other combination. The urban group hearing traffic reported the reverse. Mixed pairings, such as birdsong in the city or traffic noise on the trail, led to more neutral outcomes.

Nils Peterson, the lead author and a professor in the College of Natural Resources, stated that cities could reduce the mental-health impact of urban spaces by incorporating natural elements. He explained that adding natural sounds to gray areas might lessen their negative effects. While birdsong was one effective option, other studies have shown benefits from water sounds and similar nature cues.

The controlled design of this study helped clarify the role of sensory input. Unlike earlier research that relied on self-reported exposure or lab simulations, this experiment used headphones and an isolated trail to remove potential bias. This approach provided a clearer understanding of how sights and sounds interact.

Next steps for the research

The findings, published in Environmental Conservation, did not prescribe specific urban solutions. Peterson and his colleagues are now testing whether the benefits apply in real-world settings, such as parks with background traffic noise. They are also exploring whether certain bird species or soundscapes have stronger effects. For now, the message is simple: replacing car horns with birdsong in green spaces could make cities feel less exhausting.

Not every sidewalk requires a forest. Even small changes—like planting trees, installing water features, or playing recorded nature sounds—may help. The data indicates that combining natural sights and sounds works best, but either element alone still outperforms a fully urban experience. Spending time in natural surroundings can offer measurable benefits for well-being.

Peterson’s team continues to investigate how these findings might shape urban design.
