Researchers at North Carolina State University have documented that the sounds and sights of nature can improve mental health more than noisy city settings, according to a new study published in Environmental Conservation.

Study design isolates visual and auditory factors

Participants wore noise‑cancelling headphones while seated either on a reclaimed nature trail or in a busy urban area. The headphones played either traffic noise or birdsong, and the location‑sound pairings were randomized for each subject. This approach let the team separate the influence of the surrounding view from the audio stimulus.

After each session, volunteers reported their stress levels and how refreshed they felt, a measure researchers call “restorativeness.” The findings showed a clear pattern: those in green spaces listening to birdsong reported higher positive emotions, lower negative feelings, reduced stress, and greater feelings of restoration than any other group.

Results highlight contrast between green and gray environments

When participants were placed in an urban “gray” setting and heard traffic sounds, they experienced the opposite effect—negative emotions rose and feelings of restoration fell. Mixed results appeared when the visual and auditory elements did not match, such as a natural setting paired with traffic noise.

“For participants who were in a green space listening to the birds, there were significant effects,” said Nils Peterson, professor in the NC State College of Natural Resources and lead author of the paper. “Positive emotions went up, negative emotions went down, stress went down, and perceptions of feeling restored went up more than any other combination.”

Peterson added that the study suggests urban planners could mitigate the mental strain of “gray” spaces by introducing natural sounds. “When you have a really gray space that is going to stress people out and give them negative experiences, if you can change that space so that it has natural sounds, you can ameliorate the downsides of that gray space,” he explained.

Beyond birdsong, the research team notes a broader body of literature supporting the calming influence of water sounds and other natural audio cues. While the current experiment focused on bird calls, the authors see potential for further investigation into varied natural soundscapes.

Comparing these results to earlier work on urban green spaces, the magnitude of the effect appears larger when both sight and sound align. Past studies have shown modest mood improvements from simply adding trees to city streets; this new data suggests that pairing visual greenery with compatible natural sounds may amplify those benefits. It’s a reminder that the sensory environment matters as much as the physical one.

The study’s sample size and demographic details were not disclosed in the brief, but the experimental controls—randomized locations and soundtracks—strengthen confidence in the observed outcomes. Researchers caution that the short‑term nature of the test does not reveal long‑term mental health impacts, and they recommend follow‑up studies to track lasting effects.

In practical terms, the findings could inform design choices for parks, campuses, and even office complexes. Incorporating water features, bird‑friendly habitats, or recorded natural soundscapes may provide measurable mental health benefits for occupants.

Peterson concluded that while the evidence for bird sounds is solid, the broader field already recognizes the therapeutic value of other natural audio elements. “In our research we have evidence for bird sounds, but there is also a lot of literature supporting the use of water sounds and other things in nature,” he said.
